Six of the seven suspects accused of participating in a horrifying East Texas swingers' club where children as young as five were given prescription drugs and encouraged to perform sex acts, will soon go free, KYTX-TV reported.
The six -- Patrick Kelly, Shauntel Mayo, Jamie Pittman, Sheila Darlene Sones, Rebecca Pittman and Jimmy Sones - pleaded guilty Thursday to charges of injury to a child and will be released on time served - which is under four years.
"The court finds it is in the best interest of these children, I hope they can put this behind them in some way, and be able to live the rest of their lives without having the fear of having to come back to courtroom again and testify what was done to them," Judge Jack Skeen said, according to the local news station. "Based on the best interest of these children...the court is going to accept the plea agreements."
A seventh member of the group, Dennis Pittman, is still serving life in prison, but his lawyers plan to appeal.
The seven - who called the club Kindergarten - were originally sentenced to life in prison after they were convicted aggravated sexual assault of a child, sexual performance by a child, and engaging in organized criminal activity.
But two of the cases were overturned in 2010 because of errors made by the judge and prosecutors.
Fearing that the other three would be overturned as well, prosecutors agreed to the plea deals to keep the children from having to testify again.
"Don't make any mistake, I believe these defendants deserve life for what they did," Smith County District Attorney Matt Bingham said.
"The flip side of the coin is am I willing to make these kids go through this potentially 7 more times. I'm not. I'm making the decision I think is the right decision on behalf of the children."
