A 14-year-old Puerto Rican girl stabbed 37 of her classmates with a hypodermic needle, inciting panic that they had been infected with HIV or hepatitis C, officials said.
The incident occurred Tuesday during lunchtime at a school in the southern coastal town of Arroyo, The Associated Press reported.
Investigators said they were still trying to figure out the teen's motive.
The girl, who has been suspended from school, told them that she stole an unused syringe while visiting her relative in a local hospital - and wanted to pierce her ear with it. It's unclear how that turned into stabbing her classmates.
"She would stab one, run, stab another like it was some sort of joke," Education Secretary Jesus Riveria Sanchez told the AP.
Officials said the needle was being tested for infectious diseases and other possible contaminants.
All the students were also tested and given preventive medicine, the AP said.
