A 10-year-old Ohio boy is in custody after he allegedly murdered his 46-year-old mother and confessed the crime to a neighbor.

Joseph McVay was charged with juvenile delinquency by murder, which he denied through his attorney in court on Monday.

Police said when they arrived at the house on Sunday, they found Deborah McVay dead of a single gunshot wound to her head, lying facedown on her living room floor. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

If McVay is convicted as a juvenile, he could be in state custody until he is 21, Holmes County Prosecutor Steve Knowling told The Daily Record.

While little is known about the youngster, the 10-year-old's court-appointed lawyer said he understood what was happening "as best as any 10-year-old boy can" and appeared to be acting no differently than any other child whose mom just died.

Prosecutors told The Daily Record they brought the charge based on physical evidence and statements made by a witness and the younger McVay.

Deborah McVay's 15-year-old daughter is currently staying with relatives, CBSNews.com reported. It wasn't immediately clear if she witnessed the shooting.

Authorities told CBS they're still looking into what made the child shoot his mom.

Earlier this year, a 4-year-old boy attacked his mother with a shotgun in Washington State. She sustained injuries from birdshot shells fired from the gun, but lived, local television station KIRO 7 reported at the time.
