The final moments of a cross-country Sept. 11 memorial run turned tragic when a woman jumped to her death from the Brooklyn Bridge - just steps from a team of firefighters.
The unidentified woman leaped from the famed span at 6:15 a.m. yesterday and plunged into the waters of the East River below, police said.
Several firefighters rushed toward her before her suicidal plummet but could not reach her in time, witnesses said.
The woman jumped just hours before ceremonies at Ground Zero, but investigators are not certain if her leap was connected to the anniversary of the attacks.
Prior to the tragedy, the runners - a mix of FDNY firefighters and smokeaters from Australia - exulted in completing their trek - the "Tour of Duty" - from Los Angeles.
Firefighter James Dowdell, 26, whose firefighting father, Kevin, died on Sept. 11, said, "My dad was with us when we ran."
