Whitney Houston’s Family Blasts Lifetime Biopic

Lifetime debuts its Whitney Houston biopic on Saturday – but her family will not be watching.

The late singer’s sister-in-law Pat Houston posted a scathing statement on behalf of the Houston family about the TV movie on Friday.

The film stars Yaya DaCosta as Houston and Arlen Escarpeta as her husband Bobby Brown, and details a five-year span in the couple's marriage as Whitney's career was on the rise.

Pat, the president of the singer’s estate, expressed outrage with the film’s depiction of Whitney.

“I don't think it ever entered their minds that they were assaulting the legacy of another individual; they just want the job or the opportunity to shine,” Pat wrote.

“But to do so in such an incredible way, to go after someone who cannot correct what you get wrong, someone who – like so many people, and especially women – struggled to hold up their humanity and live with dignity despite their personal challenges, is wrong.”

In particular, she expressed fury that the biopic was made without the Houston family’s consent, claiming that none of the pop star’s relatives, including her mother Cissy or daughter Bobbi Kristina, were consulted about the film.

“This creative pursuit at the expense of the integrity of such an iconic woman, who is voiceless, reeks of condemnation and deceit,” she wrote.

Pat also leveled criticism against the biopic’s director Angela Bassett, Whitney’s friend and “Waiting to Exhale” co-star.

“Misrepresenting the term friendship to advance an agenda is not only disrespectful and dishonest but a slap in the face to her true and loyal friends,” she wrote.

She then had a warning for those planning to watch “Whitney.”

“If you watch this movie, watch it knowing that Lifetime is notorious for making bad biopics of deceased celebrities and brace yourself for the worst.”

For her part, Bassett told the News earlier this week that she and her team "aimed to tell the story as factually as we could."

As for Bobby Brown, the singer’s ex-husband will weigh in with his thoughts in a one-hour interview airing directly after the biopic, which premieres Saturday at 8 p.m. on Lifetime.
