Supergirl — or just a brisk walker?
Reality certainly didn’t live up to Serena Williams’ breathless description of her heroism in a Chinese restaurant Tuesday night when she claimed she heroically pursued a man who had stolen her cellphone.
“I jumped up, weaved my way in and out of the cozy restaurant (leaping over a chair or two) and chased him down,” the tennis champ had said in a long Facebook post on Wednesday.
In fact, Williams merely trotted out of the restaurant and confronted the sheepish man — and it was all captured on surveillance video posted by ABC News.
No, Williams didn’t jump over any chairs, let alone two, and she did not weave. And the chase consisted of a jog that many middle aged runners would recognize.
It remains unclear from the 17-second video how the incident started or where it took place — and Williams’ publicist had referred all media inquiries to the original Facebook post.
“Superhero?” she had written on the social media site, adding a picture of herself as Supergirl for good measure. “HELL YEA!! I’ve got the speed the jumps, the power, the body, the seduction, the sex appeal, the strength, the leadership and yet the calm to weather the storm.”
She also claimed to have “received a standing ovation” when she returned to the restaurant. This, alas, was also not captured on the videotape.
