VH1 ANNOINTS NEW DIVAS! BUT HAVE THEY EARNED THE TITLE?

Tina Turner, Whitney Houston … and Miley Cyrus?
VH1 announced the return of its celebrated "VH1 Divas" after a four-year hiatus on Tuesday – but this year's models may strike fans of past shows as a little off-key.

The musical showcase has tapped "American Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson, British crooners Adele and Leona Lewis, and tween sensation Miley Cyrus to wear the prima donna mantle as the series tries to sashay back into the spotlight with a live televised concert this fall.

But do these pop princesses have the chops to share the diva title with bona fide legends like Tina and Whitney, Cher and Mariah? Or is the music biz running out of true divas?

"Don't let some of their young ages fool you – these women are among the best entertainers in the world and will continue to thrill music fans for a long time to come," says Lee Rolontz, senior vice president of original music production and development at VH1 and VH1 Classic.

Although green compared with many of their diva predecessors, this next generation of singers "have all captured the world's attention with their talent and have earned their designation as VH1 Divas this year."

The "VH1 Divas" will perform at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) Howard Gilman Opera House in a live televised concert on Sept. 17 at 9 p.m. Additional fierce femmes and special guests will be announced in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, fans visiting Divas.VH1.com are invited to post video testimonials and "Diva Stories" that share how their favorite diva has influenced their life, as well as their favorite songs, and the craziest things they've done to show their idol how they feel.

Many are already sharing the love for the young ladies headlining the show.

"Kelly rocks," vouches Michael_Hearts_Kelly from NYC – who sings her hit "Since You've Been Gone" in his musical tribute video. "Kelly is my breakup cure!!"

Lucky fans' testimonials may be featured online and on-air leading up to the live telecast.

Like previous specials, this year's all-lady lovefest raises funds for the VH1 Save The Music Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to restoring musical education in public schools and raising the importance of musical arts.
