TYLER THE CREATOR SPEAKS ON HOW HE GOT KANYE WEST TO STEP HIS RAP BARS UP!

Tyler, the Creator is not one to shy away from voicing his opinion. The Odd Future purveyor has just dropped his fourth LP, Cherry Bomb, and recently spoke to Billboard at length about why this record excites him more than his previous efforts, making Kanye West step up his game and what compelled him to craft his own mobile app, Golf Wang. But first, there’s the matter of Kendall Jenner. Tyler made headlines when, during his Coachella performance, he had profane taunts for the model and reality star, who was enjoying the show from the VIP section. But the “Yonkers” rapper explained that it was all in good fun, saying, “[T]hat’s my nigga,” then adding, “I’m really good friends with her. It was literally a joke. Like, if you saw your friend, you’d be like, ‘Fuck you!’ and then go get coffee after.”
He also recounted the story of “Smuckers,” his Cherry Bomb collaboration with Kanye West and Lil Wayne, coming together at the 11th hour. “I made ‘Smuckers’ in 2011 and sent it to Jay Z and ‘Ye,” Tyler said. “They were going to use it, but I kind of took it back. I was trying to make horn sections and drum kicks that sound epic.” Then, he explains, he nailed an updated version that begged for a guest verse from a certain Louisianan. “I sent Wayne a reference of what I was going to put, and he sent me the verse back. I legit was about to cry. I played it for ‘Ye at his house literally four days before the album was due. He was like, ‘Okay, I got to step my bars up. Y’all niggas is spitting.’ It was such a sick thing to know that me and Wayne had to put ‘Ye back on his feet. Like, what the fuck?”

Tyler on a more sober point, explaining his shock at some of the police brutality that has recently become national news. “I don’t like getting deep into that stuff,” Tyler began, “but [Oklahoma shooting victim Eric Harris] said, “I’m losing my breath,” and [a police officer said], ‘Fuck your breath,’ and [Harris] died. That really made me say, ‘This is getting out of fucking hand.’ Like, white people are dicks, and I don’t mean as a whole. Even through the beginning of history, since people were writing down what was going on, Caucasian people have been assholes. It’s crazy.”
