Atlanta media mogul Tyler Perry will pay college tuition for all four of Rayshard Brooks’ children, one day after he vowed to pick up the tab for the slain man’s funeral, according to a report.
Perry, best known for his “Madea” film franchise, will make sure Brooks’ three daughters, ages 1, 2 and 8, and his 13-year-old stepson, have the cash to go to college when they’re ready, WXIA-TV reported Tuesday.
On Monday, Chris Stewart, an attorney representing Brooks’ family in the wake of his shooting death Friday by an Atlanta cop, said Perry would pay for his funeral.
“Support like that, people who are actually in the community that loves the community that wants healing, and families like this should never have to go through something like this,” Stewart said.
Brooks, 27, was shot twice in the back by Police Officer Garrett Rolfe after a scuffle outside an Atlanta Wendy’s restaurant late Friday.
The incident, coming in the wake of protests over George Floyd’s police custody death in Minneapolis on May 25, reignited tensions in the Georgia city, as Rolfe was fired and Police Chief Erika Shields resigned.
On Monday, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced new “use of force” procedures and other measures to ensure more transparency and accountability in the police department.
