The "Transformers" sequel pulled in a record-breaking $16 million with its midnight showings Wednesday, hinting at a big weekend for the critically maligned sci-fi actioner.
Although it came in just shy of "The Dark Knight"'s $18.5 million take with its own midnight showing last year, it was the biggest such showing on a Wednesday.
However, despite poor reviews, this big opening could prove that this particular event film is critic proof.
Daily News critic Joe Neumaier decribed "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" as a "louder and more illogical than the megasuccessful 2007 original." His harsh words were echoed with other reviews, which labeled the Michael Bay extravaganza as a poor follow-up to the first film.
Audiences will make the ultimate decision regarding the toy-inspired epic. The final numbers for its all-important opening weekend will not be official until Monday.
