The "SNL" alum will star in a half-hour comedy pilot for FX, the network announced Saturday at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour.
The comedy marks the '30 Rock' star return to TV following a near-fatal car crash in 2014 that left him severely injured.
In the new series, Morgan, 47, will appear as a "career criminal" who was released from prison after 15 years and struggles to reenter society.
It will be written by Jordan Peele ("Key and Peele" and "Mad TV") and John Carcieri ("Eastbound & Down").
Morgan was slated to star in an untitled comedy series for FX's sibling network FXX, but the project was nixed when Morgan was involved in a car accident in New Jersey where his car was hit by a Wal-Mart truck.
The crash killed his longtime friend comedian James "Jimmy Mack" McNair. Morgan, who suffered several broken bones and was in a coma, was hospitalized for several months.
The comedian returned to the spotlight last year when he received a standing ovation at the Emmys and hosted the fall debut of Saturday Night Live.
