The family of Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes is upset with the remaining members of TLC, after the girl group decided to re-release a 20th anniversary version of their hit song "Waterfalls" that doesn't include the rapper reciting her famous verse.
Instead, Tione "T-Boz" Watkins and Rozonda "Chili" Thomas replaced Lopes, who died in 2002, with Japanese pop star Namie Amuro for the updated version, labeled as the Japanese edition on a YouTube video.
It may have been because TLC has kicked off a tour in Japan this month as they attempt to reinvent themselves as a duo, but Lopes' sister Reigndrop Lopes said the move was shocking.
"I did not know about it until a fan posted it online," she told TMZ.
"I mean it would have been nice if they would have given us a heads up before being surprised."
Reigndrop Lopes also said her mother was "hurt" by the decision, suggesting the group isn't honoring her daughter's memory.
The same lyrics are sung, but Amuro - more or less a Britney Spears clone - doesn’t bring the same edginess to that Lopes did to the song.
"Waterfall" remains one of the group's most popular songs, largely because of her rap.
Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes died in a car crash while working on a documentary project in Honduras in 2002. Some of Lopes' lyrics from the rap in "Waterfall" were said to be engraved on her casket when she died.
