A tornado watch was in effect for New York City and the metro area until 6 p.m. Tuesday, the National Weather Service announced.
The ominous warning came as the city was drenched by rain for a second straight day - and less than two weeks after a tornado ripped Brooklyn and Queens and parts of New Jersey, killing one person and doing millions of dollars in damage.
Staten Island sustained some damage from the storm that spawned that tornado, but there's no evidence it touched down there.
The city has been hammered by five tornados in the past three years - a fact that surprised meteorologists because only five twisters hit the city between 1950 and 2006.
