The Weeknd leads the nominations for the 2016 Billboard Music Awards with 19 nods in 16 categories.
The finalists for nominations were revealed by the show's hosts, rap star Ludacris and pop-R&B diva Ciara, early Monday on “Good Morning America.”
The bounty of nods for the Weeknd, a first-time nominee, follows the breakout success of his blockbuster sophomore album, “Beauty Behind the Madness,” which won multiple Grammys this year. The alternative R&B singer is up for top artist, top male artist and top hot 100 song (his smash hits “Can’t Feel My Face” and “The Hills” compete against one another).
Justin Bieber follows with 12 nominations including top Billboard 200 album for his comeback record “Purpose.” Bieber is also in the running for top male artist — Drake, Fetty Wap and Ed Sheeran round out the category — and could be the first artist to win the award twice.
Fetty Wap and Drake are tied with nods in 10 categories each. Drake will compete against himself for top rap album for “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” and his collaboration with Future on “What a Time to Be Alive.” Fetty Wap, another first time nominee, leads the race for new artist and is also up for top song sales artist and top streaming song artist.
Adele and Taylor Swift are tied with eight nods each including top artist, top female artist, top Billboard 200 artist and top Billboard 200 album — all of which Swift won last year for the very same album she’s nominated for this year.
Nominations for Billboard Music Awards are determined by key fan interactions with music including album and digital songs sales, radio airplay, streaming, touring and social interactions on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Spotify and other popular online destinations for music. The information is tracked by Billboard and its data partners, including Nielsen Music and Next Big Sound.
The 2016 Billboard Music Awards will be broadcast from the newly opened T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on May 22 at 8 p.m.
