THE TOP RAPPERS ON TWITTER!

Pigeons&Planes: A lot of people seem to think this is a P&P list. THIS IS NOT OUR LIST. WE DIDN’T MAKE THIS. Trust me, Pitbull is not on my top list of anything, because I put forth a great deal of effort to completely ignore his existence.

YoRapper sent over this list of the top rappers on Twitter, based on number of followers, and it’s kind of interesting to look at. Like, why does Eminem have over 9,000,000 followers? He has a lot of fans, but it’s pretty clear that Eminem does not play an active role on his own Twitter account. His Tweets are the same kind of messages you see from PR people—friendly messages like, “Shady Records’ group Slaughterhouse is having a live chat tonight at 9PM EST on http://www.slaughterhouseweb.com sign on and ask some questions!” If Em was really on Twitter, would Em use exclamation points to emphasize his enthusiasm? I doubt it.

And then you see people like Tyga, who’s clawing at the front door of major mainstream appeal, sitting above people like Rick Ross, who just got crowned MTV’s Hottest MC. And Nicki Minaj easily topping her label figurehead Lil Wayne. And the whole thing makes you think: what the fuck is going on with rappers on Twitter? It’s probably a combination of factors way too complex for any simple-minded music blogger to figure out, but it’s clear that it’s not solely dependent on popularity, or engagement, or fan base demographics, or frequency of Tweets (otherwise Lil B would be #1).

Could the answer have something to do with vaginas? This is the obvious knee-jerk reaction (maybe only for me?) after seeing No. 1, but then you’ll notice Lil Kim all the way at No. 30, which brings up a few questions:

1. Does Lil Kim have a vagina?
2. Why is Lil Kim even on this list?
3. Is it because of the vagina?

These are things we may never understand, because while scientists are out dicking around with bacteria and phages and weird shit that nobody ever cares about, us bloggers are left depending on self-declared “social media gurus,” who are basically just internet geeks with avatars that look like Lenscrafters advertisements. Really, anyone can be a guru, just tweet shit like, “Did you know social media engagement among 40+ yr. old Native Americans who use public transportation is up by 47%?” Like fuck you, guru, nobody know that, and you know we didn’t know it, and you know that we have no way of testing that. But damn, it’s kind of interesting and worth a retweet.
