NewSouth Books has started the first Mark Twain storm of 2011 by announcing plans to remove "racist" remarks from Huckleberry Finn.

Just in case you've never read the book, the character Jim (a runaway Slave) is referred to by the "N-Word" throughout the book. Native Americans are also referred to as "Injuns".

This newest attempt at Political Correctness is a misguided attempt to "whitewash" an American Classic.

Huckleberry Finn does not represent the current 21st Century attitudes towards blacks or native americans but it was NEVER intended to. It was written by Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) as a representation of the attitudes which existed in the Pre-Civil War South. When read and understood in context the book mocks the racist attitudes of the Whites in the book.

Mark Twain was famous for editing his remarks before they were published. This was seen last year when the unedited version of his Autobiography was finally released.
