Convicts in Connecticut are fighting the state's ban on porn in prisons, claiming the policy violates their First Amendment rights.

Some three dozen prisoners have sent letters to the state Department of Corrections demanding to have the ban tossed out.

If the department can't reverse the ban, the group requested some leeway on soft-core alternatives, such as cable channels that show nudity and sex.

Prison officials announced in July skin flicks and nudie mags would be barred from all jails starting next summer.

Prisoners were given a year to get rid of their XXX material.

Officials said the ban was intended to protect jail staffers from having to see porn during their day-to-day duties, as well as for the convicts' own good.

"While it is not supposed to be displayed, it is still visible to staff, whether it be on the inside of a foot locker or underneath their bunks, so they are still exposed to it," Correction Department spokesman Brian Garnett told The Associated Press.

"And ... this is contrary to our rehabilitative efforts, particularly when it comes to sex offenders."

Experts said the convicts' First Amendment argument made sense, but the courts would probably side with the prisons if officials can prove the ban maintains safety and helps rehab sex offenders.
