Actor Terrence Howard cried on the witness stand Friday then turned “very angry” and requested a break to compose himself.
The Oscar-nominated “Hustle & Flow” star showed the range of emotions while fighting to overturn his 2012 divorce agreement with ex-wife Michelle Ghent.
His tears flowed when he testified under oath that Ghent repeatedly threatened to release recordings of a sexual nature along with damaging medical information unless he gave her what she wanted.
“Michelle was threatening that if I didn’t get this mediation, this settlement agreement, (signed) she would release to the public that I had herpes and that she would release the videos and audios of me in a very private and intimate place and that I would never be able to work again in this business,” he said.
The recordings included video of Howard dancing naked in a bathroom and audio of him conducting phone sex with various women, his camp contends.
“I was terrified of her releasing the private tapes,” he said Friday.
The “Empire” actor spoke slowly and softly during questioning by his own lawyer but turned combative during cross-examination.
Ghent’s lawyers hammered him about his former arrests, his sexual relationships with other women during the couple’s engagement and claims he physically abused Ghent.
Asked if he threatened suicide in 2009 by “pretending to swallow a bottle” of Valtrex pills, he recalled the incident.
“Yes,” he said. “I wanted to break up with her.”
“Did you give Michelle an STD (sexually transmitted disease)?” her lawyer Sa’id Vakili asked.
“Yes I did. Or she gave it to me,” Howard replied.
Howard admitted cheating on Ghent during their engagement with multiple women, claiming he and Ghent were not “sexually compatible.”
He said he decided to still marry Ghent because he was a Jehova’s Witness at the time and believed he should try to be monogamous.
“I needed to change my sexual (behavior) and believed if I applied bible principles I would be able to change my appetite from apple pie a la mode to just apple pie,” he said.
He denied physically abusing Ghent during a 2010 trip to South Africa for a movie shoot.
Howard said Ghent is the one who attacked him, kicking food onto his clothes because she was upset he had to kiss actress Jennifer Hudson in a scene.
He also denied sucker punching Ghent during a fight while on vacation in Costa Rica during an attempted reconciliation in 2013.
“She was macing me,” he claimed, adding that he flailed his arms in self-defense. “How did I see she was injured? My eyes were closed.”
He then asked the judge for a “moment to compose” himself saying, “I’m angry right now. Really angry.”
Howard is asking Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Thomas Lewis to toss the couple’s 2012 settlement agreement – which includes spousal support – saying it was reached under duress.
Ghent, meanwhile, has accused Howard of repeated physical abuse, infidelity and hiding money from her.
She’s seeking money she says is owed under their judgment.
Earlier this week, Howard’s lawyer played a 2011 recording of an emotional phone call between Howard and Ghent.
“I have a whole lot of money I can make by selling your sh---y tapes,” Ghent was heard saying as she berated Howard for canceling a check and cheating on her.
“There is your naked a-- dancing in the bathroom singing out loud,” she said. “You’re f---ing weird.”
Howard and Ghent were married in 2010, and she filed for divorce a year later.
She is still protected by a 2013 restraining order connected to the fight in Costa Rica.
Ghent, 38, said Howard “grabbed” her neck and tried to choke her during the trip.
The ongoing divorce dispute has prompted 20th Century Fox, which produces "Empire," to seek guidance on where to send Howard's "Empire" earnings, according to the Associated Press.
