Marriage doesn’t agree with T.I. these days.
“I can be a better best friend than a husband,” the 36-year-old star, whose real name is Clifford Harris, Jr., told Angie Martinez this week.
T.I., 36, and soon-to-be ex-wife Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, 41, split in 2016 after six years of marriage. R&B singer Tiny claims to have filed for divorce as a warning for the rapper “stop his shenanigans.” The rocky couple share three kids. Each also has other children from previous relationships.
“I’m on a mission … I’m striving to take my family, its name and our legacy as far and high as it can possibly go,” he said. “In my life there will be two different things. There will be people, places and things that help me get there and there will be people, places and things that will distract me and deter me from getting there … It just seems to me marriage and what marriage means and what marriage does — its one of them things that’s going to distract me and deter me. That could be selfish.”
T.I. says he is the patriarch and it’s his responsibility to take the family “onward and upward.”
“I have, I think, a purpose,” he added. “And I don’t always have time to do the thoughtful considerate things that a husband should do.” T.I. says no matter what, he’s not straying from his mission — although he wasn’t 100 percent clear on what that is.
As for how things between T.I. and Tiny currently are? They are co-parenting just fine.
“There is no beef,” he elaborated, even calling her one of his best friends in the world. “Like, we’re good. We’re straight. Everybody else got the problem. We see each other. We speak. We talk. We spend time together. We’re good.”
As for those pesky rumors that he’s involved with another woman, T.I. simply said, “I’m not in a relationship with nobody. I’m in a relationship with me and my mission.”
