A rumor has been going around that popular producer Swizz Beatz, who is also husband to hip hop artist Alicia Keys, was among the seven owners of online file-sharing site Megaupload who were indicted by the Department of Justice Thursday (Jan. 19). But Forbes is reporting that nowhere in the 72-page indictment filed by the DOJ is his name ("Swizz Beatz" or his real name, Kasseam Dean) mentioned.
Swizz Beatz is the Chief Executive Office of the company, but does not appear to own any share of the company. In the DOJ document, Kim Dotcom is listed as owning 68% of Mega's holding company, and six other investors own smaller stakes adding up to 32%. None of those other six are celebrities.
Forbes goes so far as to say that while Beatz was not given any equity in the company, perhaps he was "lured unwittingly to serve as a reputable figurehead for a company whose leaders could already see the storm clouds on the horizon."
The indictment is part of an alleged $175 million copyright infringement case. The DOJ says in a statement, "This action is among the largest criminal copyright cases ever brought by the United States and directly targets the misuse of a public content storage and distribution site to commit and facilitate intellectual property crime."
