SUICIDE FAIL! WOMAN JUMPS OFF THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE & GETS SAVED!

A suicidal Manhattan woman, clad only in her pajamas, survived a 120-foot plunge from the Brooklyn Bridge into the icy East River early Saturday.
A pair of NYPD divers found the woman conscious and treading water near the Manhattan shoreline after her leap from the world-renowned span around 7 a.m., police said.

"If she went hypothermic and couldn't keep herself afloat, she would have died," said Detective Michael Cocchi, one of the rescuers.

The 22-year-old jumper was spotted on the bridge walkway in her pajamas by passersby who called police just before sunrise.

She strolled to the 126-year-old bridge's midpoint before making the leap, police said.

Cocchi said she was in the 45-degree water for about 5 to 10 minutes before they arrived via helicopter, jumping into the water from the hovering chopper. She was loaded into an FDNY boat.

She was taken to Bellevue Hospital suffering from severe hypothermia. Authorities did not release her name.

The distraught jumper is not the first to survive the potentially lethal dive from the bridge. The most famous is Steve Brodie, a Brooklyn bookie who claimed to have jumped and survived in 1886.

"We've gotten quite a few jumpers who survived," said Cocchi, who was just starting his shift with Officer Jeffrey Dowling when the call arrived.

The divers also were involved in the search for bodies after last summer's midair crash of a helicopter and small plane over the Hudson River, while the chopper crew helped rescue survivors of the "Miracle on the Hudson" landing.

Cocchi said saving potential suicides is always rewarding.

"Odds are, they made a mistake, and now they get to realize it," he said. "It's nice to be able to save her life."
