‘Straight Outta Compton’ Trailer Released

The new trailer for "Straight Outta Compton" shows the West Coast rap group N.W.A's rise and fall from fame.

The F. Gary Gray-directed biopic set in Compton, Calif., tells the story of the rap trio, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and the late Eazy-E, who brought gangsta rap to the forefront of music in the '80s.

"Our art is a reflection of our reality," Ice Cube says in the trailer, with the rapper portrayed by his son O'Shea Jackson Jr. in the film.

The film highlights N.W.A recording their debut album the movie is named after. Sadly, the obstacles they faced with gangs, drugs, and police brutality are still plaguing inner cities across the country today.

"Rap is not an art," a cop told the group's manager Jerry Heller (Paul Giamatti) while telling the members to get down on the ground with their hands behind their heads.

Dre and Cube, who produced the film, reunited with Gray, who directed numerous music videos for them throughout the '90s.

"It's not like 'Social Network' or 'American Graffiti' where you take a place and time in America, especially as it relates to pop culture," Gray said in a recent interview. "You see the shift, and they were right there and created part of the pivot that America took in entertainment."

"If you had the chance to change the situation, would you take it?" Eazy-E, played by Jason Mitchell, said in the film.

The rapper, whose real name was Eric Lynn Wright, died on March 26, 1995 due to complications of AIDS.

During a promotional shoot for the film, rap mogul Suge Knight was allegedly involved in a fatal hit-and-run and is currently facing charges for the crime. On March 20, Knight collapsed in a Los Angeles courtroom after the judge set his bail at $25 million in the murder case.

"I'm very upset. I'm very upset," his father told the Daily News at the time. "We want him to be healthy. We just want to know he's okay. We can deal with everything else. We just need him to be OK."

"Straight Outta Compton" hits theaters Aug.14.
