Steve Harvey is in hot water — for making a joke about the Flint water.
The controversial comedian sparked outrage on his radio show after a caller from Flint, Mich., phoned in to tell Harvey — a Cleveland Cavaliers fan — that his team doesn't "deserve jack" after their loss in the NBA Finals to the Golden State Warriors.
"You from Flint?" Harvey asked the caller Thursday, the Detroit Free Press reported. "That's why y'all ain't even got clean water. When was the last time you touched water and it didn't have lead in it?"
Later Harvey continued his trash-talk rant, telling the caller to "enjoy your nice brown glass of water."
His co-hosts are overheard telling him to "reel it in" during the segment.
Naturally, the exchange upset many residents of Flint, where the central water supply was tainted by lead in 2014, potentially exposing more than 100,000 people to the toxic heavy metal. Residents continue to be affected by the water crisis.
The city's mayor Karen Weaver — who has appeared on Harvey's show to discuss the crisis in the past — sent a letter to the comic and asked for an apology.
"I was deeply saddened by your comments about our city," she wrote. "While I feel that it was not meant to be an intentional hurt or insult against the citizens of this city, it was."
"We are still going through many hardships and challenges caused by the poisoning of our city," she continued. "To make a joke out of tragedy such as this was in very poor taste, especially coming from someone of your stature."
Following the backlash, Harvey, 60, doubled down on his comment and chose not apologize.
"The caller and I were talking trash about our teams and cities. 'SIMPLY TRASH TALKING ABOUT SPORTS.' I made a joke directed at him, as he is from Flint, a city for which I have great affection and respect," Harvey said in a statement to central Michigan's WEYI NBC affiliate.
It's hardly the first time Harvey has found himself embroiled in controversy in recent years. He mistakenly announced the wrong winner on-air during the Miss Universe 2015 pageant in December 2015, then earned backlash last month when a leaked memo revealed he warned staff members on his daytime talk show not to pop by his office unannounced or try to walk with him in the hallway. He didn't apologize after the memo leak.
