IN THE STREETS & ON THE WEB

Rapper Soulja Boy has been charged with misdemeanor gun possession stemming from an incident last January.

Reportedly, Soulja was stopped by police in the San Fernando valley after running a stop sign and a loaded gun was found in his passenger’s seat. The rapper was arrested by Los Angeles PD, and later released on $35,000 bail. Soulja Boy claimed at the time that the gun wasn’t his and was, in fact, a neighbor’s. The Love & Hip Hop star told police that the.38 caliber revolver was left in his car when the neighbor borrowed it.

The investigation concluded and found him guility of misdemeanor gun possession. Apparently, the 24 year-old, known for his hit “Crank That (Soulja Boy)”, was also slapped with a charge for posession of marijuana.

This isn’t the first time that Soulja Boy has had a run in with the law. In 2011, he was arrested for both weed and weapons related incidents. The ever controversial hitmaker was also kicked off of a flight last year for apparently refusing to take his seat before traveling from Miami to Brazil to perform. Soulja was also served eviction papers in 2011 after allegedly falling behind on rent payments for his Atlanta apartment.

Soulja Boy, who also goes by the name Soulja Boy Tell Em, rose to prominence after posting his music online to Soundclick.com and generating enough buzz to land a deal with Interscope Records. The young rapper had his big hit in 2007, and garnered him a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Song. “Crank That” peaked at the top of the Billboard 100 and remains his biggest hit to date.

Soulja sparked a lot of controversy over lyrics in his 2011 song “Let’s Be Real”. In the song, the hip-hop star says “F*** the FBI and f*** all the army troops / fighting for what? Bitch be your own man / I’ll be flying through the clouds with green like I’m Peter Pan.”

“Let’s Be Real” caused many to boycott Soulja Boy’s music and even sparked an online petition that called for the ban of his music from Army Bases. The rapper subsequently apologized to the military for the song. “Sometimes there are things that we feel, things that we want to express, and when we put them on paper and speak them out loud, they can come out wrong”, the apology said. “So, I write this to give my sincerest apology to all members of the United States military services, as well as their families that were offended by my most recent lyrics.”
