Solange Knowles Says She Was Bullied And Called Ugly As A Teen

Being Beyoncé's younger sister didn't keep Solange Knowles from getting bullied.

And she wants teens to know that in time, things do get better.

The songstress penned a powerful letter to her younger self for Teen Vogue Wednesday about being name called, and the struggles of becoming a mother at 18.

"Young folks will call you names and grown folks will call you names. It's ok," the 30-year-old wrote. "One day you will name yourself, and that name will belong to you. it will not be the ones they ordained: 'crazy, ugly, attention-seeking, weirdo.'"

The younger sister of Beyoncé also discussed her choice to become a mother at 17 to son Daniel Julez Smith Jr., now 12, which she says forced her to grow up. She also lost her best friend.

"Seventeen will be the hardest year of your life," she writes. "It will grow you up almost immediately. you will lose your best friend whom you love so much to gun violence in a single moment, and give birth to a new one within a year."

In the inspirational letter, Solange signs off with words of advice, echoing her own hard times and how she grew and overcame it all.

She writes of overcoming pain, doubting her beauty and moments of both intense sadness and happiness.

"But most importantly, there will be you," the "Rise" songstress continued. "A whole, whole lot of it. and you will feel good about who she is and who she is still becoming."
