Smokey Robinson Wins Court Order Forcing Accusers To Surrender Cell Phones

A judge has ordered the sexual assault accusers suing Smokey Robinson to turn over their cell phones. Robinson’s legal team requested the order after raising concerns that key data may have been deleted or withheld. Robinson’s attorneys argued the anonymous plaintiffs—identified as multiple Jane Does—had been served discovery requests for cell phone records but were allegedly evading compliance. On Wednesday, December 3, Robinson formally asked the court to intervene. By Friday, December 5, the judge granted the request, ordering the accusers to surrender their phones within 10 days. The ruling gives Robinson’s defense access to potential text messages, call logs, and other communications that could be relevant to the allegations and the coordination of the lawsuit. Robinson has consistently denied all claims against him. Following the court’s decision, Robinson’s attorney, Christopher Frost, issued a statement reacting to the ruling and taking direct aim at the plaintiffs’ strategy. “We are pleased with the Court’s ruling,” Frost says. “Plaintiffs’ motives have been clear all along. File a vile and salacious complaint and then bring these plaintiffs out a handful at a time so it looks like there are new and independent allegations, when the truth is that these people all worked together to contrive this lawsuit.” Frost continued, arguing that the plaintiffs’ anonymity and discovery resistance have obscured the facts. “They are now keeping the public in the dark about the truth by hiding behind a confidentiality order and refusing to produce any documents at all,” he said. “We know the types of communications these plaintiffs had with our clients prior to deciding to sue them, so we are pleased to finally be able to access information that will help the court, a jury, and the public know the truth. The lawsuit against Robinson was initially filed in May by four Jane Does who claim they worked as housekeepers for Robinson and his wife, Frances Gladney Robinson. The suit alleges sexual battery, assault, false imprisonment, and gender violence. Since then, additional accusers—including a male plaintiff identified as John Doe—have sought to join the case, expanding both its scope and public scrutiny. In earlier filings, the male accuser alleged incidents of indecent exposure, sexual comments, and unwanted physical contact during the time he worked at the Robinsons’ Chatsworth home. A separate Jane Doe has alleged repeated unwanted contact as well. Robinson’s legal team has denied all allegations and characterized the lawsuit as a coordinated scheme meant to pressure the singer into a financial settlement.
