A young Louisiana mother was arrested after she left her crying 2½-year-old child in an unattended car outside a bar so she could go drinking, according to police.
Melissa Ibarra, 23, then allegedly drove drunk with her child in the vehicle.
The Kenner resident faces a slew of charges, including operating a vehicle while intoxicated, child endangerment, child desertion, reckless operation of a motor vhicle, having an open alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle and operating a vehicle with a suspended driver’s license, Sgt. Brian McGregor, a Kenner police spokesman, told the Times-Picayune.
Witnesses told cops they could hear the child screaming, sobbing and beating on the vehicle' window after the tot was left alone in the car Saturday.
Eventually the child's mother was paged inside the bar. But when she came back to the vehicle, she drove off with the child, who wasn' wearing a seatbelt, in the car.
Police told WDSU that when they caught up with Ibarra, she had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. Her blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit.
Ibarra was released from the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center. Her bond was $16,400.
Her child was placed in protective custody and was later released to a guardian.
