After a month posturing, Mikhail Prokhorov finally got his sitdown with Carmelo Anthony.
Nets brass met with Anthony Saturday, just hours after Prokhorov sent out a press release stating he had no intentions of meeting with the All-Star.
Minority owner Jay-Z was also involved in the meeting, as the Nets are trying to sell Anthony on signing a three-year, $65 million extension to play in New Jersey.
The meeting occurred two days after Jim Dolan sat with Anthony to sell him on the Knicks' commitment. It could be a ploy to force the Knicks hand and get them to up their offer.
In an email released Saturday afternoon by his spokesperson, Ellen Pinchuk, Prokhorov reiterated what the Russian billionaire has been saying publicly since last month.
"Just to update you, Mikhail has not met with and has no plans to meet with Carmelo Anthony. He is looking forward to enjoying All Star Weekend. We will have nothing else to add on this..."
But plans changed.
Prokhorov flew into Los Angeles early Saturday and met a Nets contingent that included CEO Brett Yormark and GM Billy King.
Late Thursday, the Nets had finally reached an agreement on a nine-player deal with the Nuggets that would have brought Anthony to New Jersey.
The Nets had hoped to meet with Anthony to entice him to sign the extension, a necessary part of the deal.
Under the proposal that was agreed upon, which was first reported by the Record in North Jersey, Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Sheldon Williams, Melvin Ely and Renaldo Balkman would go to the Nets, while Denver gets Devin Harris, Derrick Favors, Troy Murphy, Ben Uzoh and four first-round picks.
