Residents of a typically quiet Oakland neighborhood awoke to find a woman's burning body dumped in the middle of their street.
The dead woman, who was possibly killed elsewhere and then torched in the sleepy Rockridge neighborhood, was discovered by local residents around 4:30 a.m. Thursday, police said.
"It's really disturbing to have such a quiet street disrupted with crime activity like that," resident Nance O'Banion, 62, told the San Francisco Chronicle. "It's really horrible."
The secluded street where the body was left is a short hop off Highway 24, leading police to theorize the killers exited the freeway with the victim in tow before setting her afire.
"Our preliminary investigation indicates this was not a crime targeting residents in the area, and that this criminal act originated elsewhere but ended up on Ivanhoe Road," acting police Lt. Serge Babka told the Chronicle.
Police had not identified the victim, and the exact cause of death remained undetermined.
