Sean Kingston and his mother now know at least one of their fates after being found guilty of wire fraud this past March. His mother, Janice Turner, received her sentence this week. On Wednesday (July 23), Turner learned that she will spend five years in prison and three years on probation. Kingston will receive his sentence on Aug. 28, just under five months after he and his 63-year-old mother were found guilty of four counts of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Turner was apologetic before learning her sentence. “I’m sorry,” she told the judge, per CBS. “My intention was to keep my son afloat in this difficult industry. They used him and abused him. I am begging for mercy for me and my son.” Together, she and the 35-year-old singer procured over $1 million via wire fraud; Turner will have to pay restitution to those they took advantage of, but her legal team said that most of the businesses have already been compensated. Kingston and his mother’s fraud scheme took place in 2024. They defrauded vendors of luxury items, including but not limited to premium vehicles and jewelry. They claimed to have made wire payments for the items, but that was proven to be false. They were arrested in May 2024 (Kingston in California and Turner in Florida). Kingston was taken to Fort Irwin, a military base in California, before he waived extradition and returned to Florida. Both also had previous run-ins with the law. Kingston received a two-year probation sentence for trafficking stolen property, and Turner served an almost 18-month prison sentence for bank fraud that yielded her over $160,000. This past April, Kingston was taken into custody after his guilty verdict, but posted $100,000 bond before his release.
