Rude ‘Arthur’ Memes Disappoint Show's Creators

Arthur the aardvark is no longer PG.

Countless memes have been created to modernize and sexualize the classic PBS cartoon that graced children's television screens 20 years ago and now the network behind the show is wishing that social media users would tone it down.

The network is clearly not pleased that the children's cartoon, which teaches kids life lessons about growing up through its jovial animal characters, has been tied to everything from baby mama drama to financial aid woes.

The most popular Arthur meme zooms in on an image of the character's tightened fist captioned with jokes or gripes that pertain mostly to millennials. But the ones that have the network up in arms are the vulgar messages promoting sex and drugs.

“Our hope is that Arthur and his friends will be depicted in a way that is respectful and appropriate for all audiences, including young Arthur fans and their families,” WGBH network spokeswoman, Ellen London, said.

"We certainly are lucky to have a fan base that is so engaged with Arthur, especially those millennials who grew up with him,” London added.
