She may have won eight Grammys, two Brits and a string of World’s Sexiest Woman awards — but Rihanna will not be happy until she has an Oscar to her name.
The Bajan singer, 29, is returning to the big screen in sci-fi action flick “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets,” out this month.
And while this role might be more of a summer blockbuster and light on Academy Award-winning angst, RiRi is eyeing up meatier parts so she can join Cher and Jennifer Hudson as pop stars who have won acting’s highest accolade.
She told The Sun on Sunday: “I’d love to get there one day. Who doesn’t want to be told they are doing a great job? Any validation that your work is impacting is rewarding. I work hard and put my all into everything I do but the rest isn’t up to me. I don’t think anyone makes an album thinking about winning a Grammy, or makes a movie thinking about winning an Oscar. What you do is work as hard as you can and if awards follow, then that’s great.”
As “shape-shifting entertainer” Bubble in “Valerian” — which is based on French comics “Valérian and Laureline” — Rihanna may not have taken on an obvious Best Actress role.
But the singer has not ruled out going full Method in future, where she will be measured against the likes of masters of the craft Daniel Day-Lewis and Hilary Swank.
She said: “It’s pretty difficult to method act when it comes to playing a shape-shifting entertainer but, seriously, I have nothing but respect for the actors that do. If you look at the well-known Method actors of the generation, they put in incredible performance after incredible performance. It’s no coincidence. I just do what’s best for the role, what’s best for me, I’d love to do something dark and different and challenge myself.”
Rihanna’s film career got off to a shaky start after she landed a Best Supporting Actress Razzie — Golden Raspberry Award — for her turn in board game-turned-blockbuster “Battleship” in 2012.
She recalls begging director Peter Berg: “Please protect me and make sure I’m good. I will do anything to be good. Don’t go easy on me. Don’t stop until you feel like you’ve got it.”
Aside from cameos in 2006 straight-to-DVD film “Bring It On: All or Nothing” and the 2014 “Annie” remake, her only other screen outing came as the main voice in 2015 animation “Home.”
Rihanna describes “offering herself like clay” to her directors, adding: “You don’t do diva on film sets.”
And it appears she is molding a bigger future for herself in film, with “Valerian” already in the bag and next year’s all-star “Ocean’s Eight” still to come.
The future is looking bright off screen, too, after she started dating millionaire Saudi Hassan Jameel.
Pictures emerged this week of the couple snogging in a hot tub in Spain, with Rihanna — whose exes include music stars Chris Brown and Drake — reportedly “smitten” with the Toyota heir.
She also has close girl friends, particularly best pal and “Valerian” co-star Cara Delevingne, who was one of the main draws for her doing the project.
The pair are regularly snapped stumbling out of clubs together and posing for selfies on yachts.
But the singer was quick to point out that model Delevingne, 24, was much more than her “wifey,” saying: “Myself and Cara are incredibly close.
“It’s portrayed like we are just party buddies but there is much more to our friendship. She is great fun to go out with but, more importantly, I value our closeness.
“We have busy schedules but no matter where either of us are in the world, we know we can just pick up the phone and unload on each other, and that we are always ready to listen or offer advice.
“If you have two or three friends like that in this world then you can call yourself blessed. She is very special to me.”
Rihanna regularly tells Delevingne: “Everything happens for a reason. You are going to call me back in a week or two, and you are going to say, ‘You are right.’”
But she adds: “We get silly with each other as well. The first time we met was because she came up to me and slapped me on the bum.”
Rihanna is unashamedly an anti-role model. She smokes cannabis and revels in her sexually explicit antics when she performs live.
She fends off expectations that she should be more responsible for her fans, saying: “Taylor Swift is more of a typical role model. I’m not.
“I’ve never claimed to be a role model. I know I’m not perfect and have never tried to portray that.
“I was extremely fortunate my mother and grandmother were very strong women. It’s important young girls have strong women in their day-to-day lives to influence them.
“Sure they can look up to the artists and movie stars they admire, but never ignore those strong women close to home.”
Given her new film’s galactic setting, Rihanna was quick to address rumors that she is so obsessed with space that she has paid millions for three seats on Sir Richard Branson’s maiden Virgin Galactic flight.
She said: “I totally get the appeal of being one of the first passengers … But no, I would want to see how it went. I’m not shooting straight up there first time. For now I will stick with Barbados. I’ve got some more bikinis I want to try out.”
