Raekwon had an emotional moment last night during his Only Built for Cuban Linx 2 concert at New York's Irving Plaza. The Chef was rolling his classic tunes such as "C.R.E.A.M." (he performed both his and Inspectah Deck's verses) and "Ice Cream" (Cappadonna came out as a surprise guest) when he took time to acknowledge the presence of an extra-special VIP. He announced to the crowd that Ol' Dirty Bastard's mother, Cherry Jones, was in the building and that she braved the cold last night to come to show.
In a heartwarming moment, Rae brought Ms. Jones on to the stage, and the pair hugged for a couple of minutes, likely reminiscing about their deceased loved one, who died in 2004 of an apparent drug overdose. Rae's DJ then played a piece of ODB's "Shimmy Shimmy Ya."
"Oooh baby I like it raw," the crowd sang along. "Yeah baby I like it rawww!/ ... Shimmy shimmy ya, shimmy ya shimmy ya."
Rae then went into his ODB tribute song, "Ason Jones."
"N----s really loved ODB," the Chef emotionally told the crowd. "I don't even know if this rhyme is gonna come out. Play it my n---a. ... Sh--."
The crowd chanted, "ODB! ODB!" before Rae started rapping:
"He was a powerful general," the Staten Island legend began to rap. "The smell from his breath was Ballantine/ I think it was the year '89/ He stayed the freshest, Polo boots, Wallys with them colorful, low Gooses/ Coming from Medina we boost/ We up in A&S, slipping and dipping to Bed-Stuy/ Native, he used to beatbox, thousands'll listen/ Yo, that's before the Wu got on/ Him and Allah Just' and RZA came to the island one morn/ A n---a could dance to slow music, outdrink any n---a."
During the chorus of the song, which is basically composed of excerpts from an ODB interview, Rae stood silent, one hand on the speaker, his head hung down in thought.
Rae then went into the second verse of the song with no beat.
"He had a heart of gold, an intelligent soul from day one/ Loud as the ferry, best friend was momma Cherry/ Sweet lady, BK baby/ She taught Dirty how to cook, clean, singing the songs 'Sade'/ Old-school dances and O.E., Ballantine, the wine we sipped/ While we sat with the O.G.'s."
The Chef also brought out CNN for a brief set of their throwback bangers — collectively and individually — such as "Super Thug," "Nothin' " and "Y'All Don't Wanna." CNN Militainment and Rae's ICE H20 announced a joint venture to release Capone-N-Noreaga's War Report 2.
Busta Rhymes was also in the audience, although Raekwon didn't point him out during the show.
