A Japanese airline has apologized for its "racially stereotyping" TV commercial that claimed all Westerners had big noses and blond hair.
All Nippon Airways came under fire for the 30-second spot, first aired Saturday, where two pilots talk in English about how they can boost the profile of the airline abroad.
"Let's change the image of Japanese people," one of the men says. His friend replies "sure" before donning a blond wig and long rubber nose.
Social media went into overdrive after the first broadcast of the ad.
"I've just seen the new ANA advert...Really? ANA think this is OK?!" posted Angela Fukutome on the airline's Facebook page.
Another critic tweeted: "If you are a foreigner and have planned to come to #Japan do not choose an openly racist airline like #ANA! Watch their Japanese commercial."
Airline bosses insist they meant no offense with the clip, designed to promote its beefed-up schedule of international flights from Tokyo's Haneda airport.
They have since promised to "modify" the segment before it is aired again.
"We've received opinions different from the message we wished to convey. We will modify part of the advertisement and release the second version soon," spokesman Ryosei Nomura told the Japan Times.
