R. Kelly is set to plead not guilty to charges relating to him bribing a state official to obtain a fake id for Aaliyah.
According to court documents obtained by The Blast, Kelly’s lawyer, Steven Greenberg, has informed the court he spoke to his client about the superseding indictment, which included the new charge of bribery.
Earlier this month, prosecutors hit Kelly with a brand-new charge of bribery. They accused him of paying off an Illinois state official to get then 15-year-old Aaliyah a fake id. The then 27-year-old Kelly used the id, which said Aaliyah was 18 years old, to get married to the late singer.
The document read “On or about August 30, 1994, within the Northern District of Illinois, the defendant ROBERT SYL VESTER KELL Y , together with others, did knowingly and intentionally cause another individual to promise and tender to a public officer and public employee property, to wit: Unites States currency, that such public officer and public employee was not authorized by law to accept, with the intent to influence the performance of an act related to the employment and function of a public officer and public employee, to wit: the creation of a fraudulent identification document for Jane Doe #1.”
Prosecutors do not hold back in the new documents. They said, “the defendant ROBERT SYLVESTER KELLY was the leader of the Enterprise.”
Back in September, prosecutors first revealed they planned to use Kelly’s marriage to an underage Aaliyah. They informed the court they were entering the marriage certificate into evidence.
They said, “Defendant even married a 15-year-old girl when he was 27 years-old. The government produced in discovery to the defendant the official marriage application, marriage certificate, and annulment records for this marriage. Far from being a one- time mistake, defendant’s sexual abuse of minors was intentional and prolific.”
According to the marriage certificate obtained by The Blast, the wedding between Kelly and Aaliyah was officiated on August 31, 1994 by Elder Nathan J. Edmond during a religious ceremony in Rosemont, Illinois.
The marriage was made official when it was recorded on September 6, 1994, but it was later annulled after Aaliyah's parents found out.
