Prince Gets Pantone Color Named In His Honor

The Purple One now has a color named after him.

A new shade of purple honoring late rock legend Prince has been created by The Pantone Color Institute in collaboration with The Prince Estate.

The shade’s official name is the iconic symbol Prince changed his name to when he was “The Artist Formerly Known As Prince,” but fans can call it “Love Symbol #2” — which was what Prince copyrighted the glyph as.

“The color purple was synonymous with who Prince was and will always be. This is an incredible way for his legacy to live on forever,” Troy Carter, Entertainment Advisor to Prince’s Estate, said in a statement.

Pantone is considered worldwide as the authority on color, naming and standardizing colors to make them easily reproducible. The Pantone Color Institute has also declared a “Color of the Year” since 2000, which fashion designers, florist and others use to plan product hues for the upcoming year.

Love Symbol #2 — inspired by Prince’s purple, custom-made Yamaha piano — will be the official, consistent hue associated with Prince’s brand and estate.

“We are honored to have worked on the development of Love Symbol #2, a distinctive new purple shade created in memory of Prince, ‘the purple one,’” said Laurie Pressman, Vice Preside of the Pantone Color Institute. “Love Symbol #2 enables Prince’s unique purple shade to be consistently replicated and maintain the same iconic status as the man himself.”

Pantone designated 1,867 colors in its most recent color guide, out last year, which is available for design professionals to create their looks.

This isn’t the first new shade out this year. Crayola is holding a vote through Aug. 31 to name a new shade of blue discovered in a lab accident.
