Pitbull is giving back by opening a charter school in the Miami neighborhood where he grew up.
The SLAM or Sports Leadership and Management school will focus on preparing young scholars for careers in the sports field.
Born Armando Christian Pérez, Pitbull explained that his own positive experiences with teachers inspired him to get involved in education.
“Teachers have changed my life,” he told The Washington Post. “I had a second grade teacher who taught me there is a way out. Then I had an 11th grade teacher, Ms. Martinez, who taught me to believe in myself. So it’s the same thing I want to do with the kids.”
The 32-year-old Cuban-American rapper who knows how to make sexy music has now taken on the challenge of making education as appealing as pop culture is to the youth.
“Sometimes what happens is education is no longer sexy, it’s no longer cool,” he said. “I want to help put together curriculum’s in school where it does entertain them, engage them and one way or another just makes it fun again.”
While the “Feel This Moment” rapper makes hit songs and is affectionately known as Mr. Worldwide, he is also a very savvy businessman who credits his mother for guiding his life with education.
“My mother always told me two of the most dangerous diseases in the world are ignorance and greed,” he recalled. “That’s why we have to educate. That’s why I fight for it and that’s why I feel it’s the real revolution.”
SLAM will be run by non-profit Mater Academy and Academia, a national charter school management company.
“There’s no way you could tackle any obstacle or any issue around the world if you’re not educated,” he added.
