The former queen of daytime television now has a lot to say.
Oprah Winfrey revealed she suffered a near nervous breakdown last year in an interview with “Access Hollywood’s” Shaun Robinson.
“It was just sort of speeding and a kind of numbness and going from one thing to the next thing to the next thing,” Winfrey recalled. “I thought … ‘if I don’t calm down I’m going to be in serious trouble.’”
Although the 59-year-old media mogul is one of the richest and most powerful women in the world, she began noticing things that left her uneasy.
“I was in the middle of doing voiceovers and I remember closing my eyes in between each page because looking at the page and the words at the same time was too much stimulation for my brain,” she said.
Winfrey’s “ah-ha” moment came in October last year during an interview with “Kony 2012” director Jason Russell. The filmmaker and Invisible Children co-founder had a very public breakdown in March, in which he ran around naked vandalizing cars and masturbating.
“He did some irrational things brought on by extreme exhaustion and dehydration,” Russell’s wife said around the time of the incident after defending him against claims of substance abuse and having a drinking problem.
“I was sitting and listening to Jason Russell describe his symptoms,” Oprah continued. “[I thought], ‘Um, this sounds pretty familiar to me.’”
During that time Winfrey’s network, OWN, was struggling to stay afloat as she continued her rigorious travel schedule to interview celebrities around the country while also filming “The Butler.”
She continued moving full speed ahead despite her concerns and the similarities she found between herself and Russell. Winfrey finally pushed on the brakes.
“I had reached a point where I just couldn’t take in anymore stimulation,” she said.
