A cleaver-wielding maniac hacked seven kindergarten students and two adults to death Wednesday morning in a bloody rampage through a ramshackle Chinese schoolhouse.
Killer Wu Huanming, 48, wounded another 11 students before returning to his nearby home and committing suicide, local government officials said.
Five boys and two girls were killed, along with the school's manager and his 80-year-old mother, the official government Xinhua News Agency reported.
The killer was apparently enraged by a dispute over the length of the school year. Wu Huanming owned the two-story farmhouse that doubled as a school outside the city of Hanzhong.
When he demanded that school manager Wu Hongying immediately return the rented building, the official asked to keep the private Shengshui Temple Kindergarten open through summer vacation.
The owner responded by attacking the manager and the students as they arrived around 8:20 a.m. for the start of classes in the rural area of northwest China.
Wu Hongying and a student were killed immediately as the mayhem began, with the attacker slashing nearly every student in the school of about 20 children, officials said.
The 11 injured kids were taken to a local hospital, where their injuries were reported as non-life threatening.
It was the fifth violent attack on Chinese schoolchildren since late March, leaving 17 people dead and more than 60 injured.
