With Julianna Smoot stepping down as the White House social secretary, President Obama kept his tradition of making groundbreaking choices for the official party planner, this time choosing an openly gay male.
Jeremy Bernard, who was officially named the new social secretary by the White House on Friday afternoon, is not only the first openly gay person to be named to the post but also the first man.
The former Democratic fund-raiser in Los Angeles previously worked as the White House liaison to the National Endowment for the Humanities, according to the Los Angeles Times.
"Jeremy shares our vision for the White House as the People's House, one that celebrates our history and culture in dynamic and inclusive ways," Obama said in a statement. "We look forward to Jeremy continuing to showcase America's arts and culture to our nation and the world through the many events at the White House."
Bernard is the President's third social secretary in his first two years in office. The administration's first social secretary, Desiree Rogers, left after a scandal-filled year that included letting a wanna-be reality-star couple into a state dinner. Smoot is stepping down to help Obama's reelection efforts in Chicago, the administration said earlier this year.
Jonathan Capehart, a columnist for the Washington Post, wrote that he has been friends with Bernard for years.
"He will bring a certain warmth and irreverence to the job that will make him a joy for his colleagues to work with. His knowledge of the Obamas and his intense attention to detail will ensure that their vision for the people's house continues seamlessly. And he has a reverence for the presidency and the meaning of the White House that will make him an imaginative steward of their image," he wrote.
The White House social secretary is in charge of hosting visitors, planning state dinners and hundreds of other official events for the President and the First Lady.
"I am deeply humbled to join the White House staff as social secretary and support President Obama and the First Lady in this role," Bernard said in a statement. "I have long admired the arts and education programs that have become hallmarks of the Obama White House, and I am eager to continue these efforts in the years ahead."
