A police car collided with a Cadillac, jumped the sidewalk and hit several people in the East Village - including a mother clutching her baby girl, cops and witnesses said.
"The cop car went up on the sidewalk and the mom turned around to see," said Emerald Kennedy, 22, who saw the horrific accident Tuesday afternoon.
"She snatched the baby from the carriage and the carriage got smashed by the cop car.
"The mother got hit while she was holding the baby ... she fell backwards with the baby in her arms, everybody was like 'Where's the baby? Where's the baby?' because we saw a carriage under the cop car and we didn't know where the baby was.
"We ran over there looking for the baby and we saw the baby in the mother's arms."
The baby had a scraped leg, according to witnesses.
Five people were rushed to Bellevue Hospital, at least one in serious condition, shortly after the 4:15 p.m. accident on Ave. D and E. 5th St., police said.
Onlookers said the NYPD car was moving fast, with no audible siren, when it collided with a white Cadillac Eldorado heading in the opposite direction.
There were conflicting reports from witnesses as to whether the cop car's lights were flashing.
After smashing into the cabby, the police car mounted the curb, hitting the pedestrians.
In addition to the mother and baby, a man standing outside a discount store on Ave. D was injured. Two men in the Cadillac were also hurt.
"The cop was going really fast, too fast," said Brian Cooper, 42, who lives in the neighborhood.
"The police car jumped the curb and struck pedestrians on the sidewalk.
"I heard two loud bangs, the first when he hit the Cadillac and the second when he hit the building."
"This is a really small street, they were going so damn fast," he added.
"All the cops always speed up this street."
Police said the officers were driving a marked vehicle and both cops were taken to Beth Israel Medical Center with minor injuries.
