Dominic Carter's angry brother-in-law accused the NY1 political anchor of being a cheat and a wife beater who abused his sister for 20 years and "should go to jail."
"Dominic needs to pay for some of the crimes he committed," a furious Larry Stevens said Thursday as Carter prepared to face a Rockland County judge and answer charges that he beat up his wife Marilyn last year.
"You can't just physically abuse people and think you're above the law."
Stevens said the last time he saw his sister, Marilyn, was four years ago and she "had a black eye."
"I told her financially I'd help her get out of that marriage," said Stevens, 62, of Rosedale, Queens.
"If it's causing problems with your kids, you need to get out of it."
Marilyn Carter "wanted a divorce for adultery," said Stevens. "She never followed up. They hired lawyers but they never got a divorce."
Instead, Stevens said Carter cut his sister off from her siblings and extended family.
"I've always been very worried," he said.
Now Carter, who grills politicians for a living, is on the hot seat and facing potentially career-damaging charges of punching, kicking and choking his wife last year during a fight at their suburban Rockland County home.
It was a devastating development for Carter, whose "Inside City Hall" program is a must-watch for pols and political junkies and who moderated the Oct. 13 mayoral debate.
Carter, 45, is also known for his autobiography "No Momma's Boy," in which he described a hellish Bronx childhood of physical and sexual abuse at the hands of a schizophrenic mom who tried to strangle him when he was a baby.
Carter's bosses at NY1 declined to discuss his status, but the burly host did not anchor his Wednesday night show.
The Carters met at SUNY Cortland when he was a student and she was an administrator.
Married in 1985, they have two children and live in Pomona.
Police records appear to back up Stevens' claim that the Carter marriage was marred by violence - and that Ramapo cops made several visits to the couple's troubled home.
Carter was arrested for assaulting his 52-year-old wife on Oct. 22, 2008.
