IN THE STREETS & ON THE WEB

NO MORE HOOKERS ON CRAIGSLIST AS THEY REMOVE THE ADULT SERVICES ADS!

A sexier side of Craigslist is closed -- at least for now.
The classified advertising website closed the adult services section, just two weeks after 18 state attorney generals said there weren't enough safeguards barring potentially illegal ads promoting prostitution.

The section has been replaced by a black highlighted strip that says "censored."

Craigslist did not return calls seeking comment.

Officials have come under increasing pressure to ban the ads following the high-profile case of dubbed ‘Craigslist Killer,' Philip Markoff.

The 24-year-old former medical student was accused of killing a masseuse he met to Craigslist. He committed suicide in a Boston jail last month where he was waiting to go on trial.

The adult services section ran ads for services including personal massages and a night's company.

Jim Buckmaster, Craigslist's CEO said in May that the company's ads were no worse that those ran in alt-newspaper chain Village Voice Media. Buckmaster pointed out one ad that included the phrase "anything goes for $90."

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, one of the officials who criticized the adult services section, heralded the change and said he wanted to review the website's official policy for the future.

The 18 AGs suggested that the Adult Services section be shut down in a letter to Buckmaster dated Aug. 24.

"In our view the company should take immediate action to end the misery for the women and children who may be exploited and victimized by these ads," the letter stated.
