The longstanding ratings battle between the city’s top two hip-hop radio stations has taken a personal — and ugly turn.
The hosts of Power 105.1’s Breakfast Club — Charlamagne Tha God, Angela Yee and Deejay Envy have taken off the gloves when it comes to their Hot 97 rivals Funkmaster Flex and Peter Rosenberg.
And vice versa.
“It’s the old regime versus the new regime,” says Charlamagne, who puts his crew in the latter category.
Trouble started at the controversial Summer Jam hip-hop extravaganza that Hot 97 hosted at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on June 3.
Rosenberg, who also hosts MTV2’s “Hip Hop Squares,” declared that Nicki Minaj’s hit single “Starships” was not “real hip hop,” which prompted the Queens native to back out of her scheduled performance at the concert.
Later in the show, Flex blasted Minaj for leaving and ranted, “I’m dedicated to tearing you down.”
His righteousness did not last very long. One night later, the deejay had Minaj on his radio show and his conciliatory conversation with the cartoon-haired artist became the subject of much derision on Power 105.1’s “Breakfast Club” the next morning.
Charlamagne teed off on Flex, christening him the “Donkey of the Day” on Tuesday.
He also called the rival deejay a “b---h” and mocked Flex’s about-face with Minaj.
“Michael Jackson would be proud of that moonwalk,” Charlamagne said.
Flex responded four days later in a heated hour-long rant on his Saturday-night show, complete with explosion sound effects.
Flex called Envy a “snitch” and Charlamagne a “Smurf.” He also hinted that Charlamagne was involved in a robbery in South Carolina. (“Never happened,” replied Charlamagne.)
He also recounted the story of Charlamagne’s father, Leroy McKelvey, being arrested in September for using a Taser on a fan at a Jets-Cowboys game.
“He said everything except I’m gay,” says Charlamagne. “But there’s nothing he can say that would offend me.”
Flex’s rant came a day after Rosenberg took his own shots at the Breakfast Club during his program, “The Cipha Sounds and Peter Rosenberg Show.”
“They’ve been talking tough for a long time,” Rosenberg told us, “so hopefully they’re prepared because I have a lot to say this week.”
The rival stations have been battling for ratings dominance for years, and though Hot97 used to reign, Power 105.1 has recently overtaken its competitor.
The most recent Arbitron ratings for the period of April 12-May 12 show Power 105.1 with 3.2 audience share compared with Hot97’s 3.0.
So you got power 105 saying Flex is a wife beater & she got a restraining order against him! But that's nothing new! That info came out when it happened! So they are just muckraking! Lol! Flex went on the radio & aired out Charlamagne & Envy's dirt from the streets saying that they are soft & got robbed. To tell you the truth I only listen to Power 105 but this whole sh!t is wack! On some real sh!t Flex disrespected Charlamagne & Envy in a major way & they over there playing that woman card! Smh! #ManUp Ni**as
