“Baby Got Back” is back - via Nicki Minaj.
The big-behind rapper built her entire new “Anaconda” single - out Monday - around the beat, and a key rap sample, from the 1992 Sir-Mix-A-Lot classic.
The chorus swipes Mix-A-Lot’s original reading of the undying verse: “my anaconda don’t want none/unless you got buns, hun.”
Minaj’s raps, which occupy the verses, focus obsessively, proudly, and amusingly on her famously shaped rump.
“I got a big, fat a---/F--k you if you skinny,” cackles the rapper.
We probably should have seen the sample coming. Not only is the song named “Anaconda,” Minaj sent out an image last week that zoomed in on her barely clad behind.
That racy image sent the twitterverse reeling, as did the rapper’s announcement she was delaying the release of the song from last week until Monday, with the tease that we’ll “soon see why.”
Fans saw just why on Sunday, when Minaj turned up as guest rapper on Beyonce’s new remix for her 2013 song “Flawless.”
Minaj takes up nearly half of the Bey song, but, in a sense, she stands out more there than on her own “Anaconda” single. While Minaj has built a key part of her brand on her bottom, the song’s over-reliance on the Mix-A -Lot sample feels like piggy-backing on the someone else’s legacy.
