Nick Cannon wasn't going to let a little thing like "mild" kidney failure keep him from celebrating his wife Mariah Carey at Saturday Night's BET Honors.
The 31-year-old “America’s Got Talent” host had been hospitalized earlier this month in Aspen, Colo., during a family vacation, but recovered enough to share the podium as his "hero" was lauded for her achievements as an entertainer.
"What most people don't get to experience is the human," he said. "To know you guys are honoring her tonight, I have to continue to honor her every day."
Carey, 41, broke the news of Cannon’s medical condition on Jan. 4, posting a photo of herself lying alongside her husband in a hospital bed and urging fans to "please pray for Nick as he’s fighting to recover."
Cannon told the audience at the Warner Theater in Washington, D.C. Saturday that his wife made him soup at 3 a.m. during the painful recovery.
A teary Carey, who stole the show in a body-hugging black evening gown, accepted the award from her husband and eight-month-old son Moroccan after joking about the absence of the infant's twin sister. "We were both sewn into our dresses, so she couldn't make it out," Carey said of her daughter Monroe.
The fifth annual BET Honors, which celebrates African Americans’ excellence in major fields, also honored poet Dr. Maya Angelou, Spike Lee, Stevie Wonder, Beverly Kearney and the Tuskegee Airmen, whose contributions to the U.S. Air Force in World War II are the subject of the upcoming movie, "Red Tails."
