Nick Cannon has gotten himself into a doggone mess.
The host of New York's 92.3 NOW radio station was at the receiving end of some overwhelming backlash Thursday when his radio stunt appeared to have gone too far.
Having won a bet with his co-host Sarah Lee Owensby, Cannon was given permission to watch her Pomeranian dog, Charlie Roo, for the day. But having expressed a dislike for animals, Cannon planned to do more than just dog-sit.
Staffers on the other end of a phone call with Cannon could be heard on-air allegedly tying at least 50 balloons to the tiny pup in an attempt to see if it could lift from the ground. After a commotion was heard, the radio station cut straight to music for an extended period of time.
Cannon returned to the airwaves to say the radio bit had "gone seriously wrong." He announced Owensby had left the studio in tears and feared his job was at stake.
"I think I might be getting fired..." Cannon, 31, tweeted. "They are saying the program director, my producer and I are getting arrested. This can't be serious!"
However, his tone quickly turned in a follow-up tweet: "People are acting like I'm Mike Vick. I apologize. Now get over it."
Nearly nine hours later, Cannon fessed up and admitted the elaborate scheme was merely a prank - primarily pulled on Owensby.
He revealed a dummy stuffed animal was actually tied to the balloons, and the lucky fan who captures it will find a pair of tickets to Katy Perry's concert.
Regardless of the hoax, many fans didn't seem to agree with Cannon's joke.
"Even if this @NickCannon story isn't true, the fact that he went along with this 'joke' makes him a horrible person and an IDIOT," one commenter tweeted.
Added another, "Tying a dog to balloons and letting her float away IS ABUSE. yes, just like michael vick. i'm so disappointed."
Despite Cannon's claims that PETA had contacted his boss, a rep for the animals rights organization said that never happened.
Still, PETA claims the stunt went too far.
"Joking about killing a dog, a kid, an old person - anyone - isn't cool when there's always the danger that some numbskull will do it for real," the rep tells the Daily News. "Had it been true, Nick would have PETA to worry about-and that's far worse than going to Rikers Island."
By the end of the day, it sounded as though Cannon had his tail between his legs.
"Saw a lot of peoples true colors today though," he wrote. "Good to know how you really feel about me #NOBODYLOVEME."
Don't he know you don't f**k with white people & their dogs? They think dogs are like people! Lol!
