A bitter cold snap is sweeping the mid-Atlantic and Northeast, with wind chills making it feel as cold as 50 below in some regions and subfreezing temperatures linked to at least two deaths.
In New York, the thermometer is dropping to the lowest level in years, and The National Weather service warned city dwellers to beware the risk of frostbite and hypothermia amid arctic chills and brisk winds.
By 9 a.m., the temperature in the city was just 11 degrees, with wind chills making it feel like 3 degrees, according to The Weather Channel. Winds were around 4 miles per hour.
The National Weather Service is predicting a high of 20 degrees in New York on Monday.
The bitter temperatures are expected to continue ahead of another snowstorm, according to The Weather Channel.
Scattered flurries are predicted to start falling tonight, with more snow expected tomorrow during the day.
The high was predicted to jump to 40 degrees tomorrow and then remain in the 30s through the weekend.
The cold killed at least two people in the Northeast over the weekend, including one woman whose frozen body was found in a driveway in North Haven, Conn.
Denise O'Hara, 50, apparently fell in the driveway and froze to death Saturday night.
A man, Alan Kurtz, 49, died while spending the night in his car in freezing temperatures near Philadelphia Friday night.
In Connecticut, a home burned to the ground after freezing residents tried to warm some frozen pipes using a heat gun, CBS reported.
The bone-chilling temperatures have some schools around the Northeast opening late, while others have canceled class for the day.
In some areas around upstate New York, western Pennsylvania, Vermont and New Hampshire, temperatures plummeted to as low as 25 degrees below zero -- with the wind chill making some New England areas feel as cold as 50 degrees below.
