New Notorious B.I.G. Documentary Coming To Netflix

Netflix is honoring The Notorious B.I.G., also known as Biggie Smalls, with a new documentary.

Netflix dropped its first trailer Monday for the upcoming film, "Biggie: I Got A Story To Tell" (streaming March 1), which is set to explore the legendary Brooklyn rapper's rise to fame, his legacy in the music industry and his untimely death more than 20 years ago. The documentary, will feature never-before-seen footage filmed by his best friend, Damion "D-Roc" Butler, with Sean "Diddy" Combs serving as executive producer.

The trailer features interviews with the rapper's closest friends and family members in order to offer an inside look into a side of Biggie that the world never knew.

"Biggie blew up overnight," says Combs, who helped launch B.I.G.'s career in the '90s. "We have no origins from what rap planet this guy came from."

"I was happy that he was making something with his life," his mother adds in the trailer.

Famed for hit songs including "Hypnotize," "Juicy" and "Mo Money Mo Problems," Wallace was fatally shot at age 24 in Los Angeles on March 9, 1997 — approximately six months after that of rapper Tupac Shakur, who died in the same manner in Las Vegas. Wallace's sophomore album "Life After Death" was released in the weeks following his death.

Notorious B.I.G, whose real name is Christopher Wallace, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on May 2, 2020 at Cleveland's Public Auditorium. The late rapper, along with Whitney Houston, was nominated for the first time for music's pantheon, which also welcomed Depeche Mode, the Doobie Brothers, Nine Inch Nails and T. Rex in the same Rock Hall class. An artist is not eligible for induction until 25 years after the release of their first single, album or EP, meaning that the 2020 class had to have released their first eligible music in 1994 or earlier.
