Milwaukee Bucks' Decision To Sit Giannis Antetokounmp Cost Him Nike Endorsement Bonus

The Milwaukee Bucks’ losing season just hit Giannis Antetokounmpo’s wallet hard. Now, by shutting him down for the year, the team is set to cost him a major bonus in his Nike endorsement deal. Even though he is earning a $54 million base salary this year, the team’s decision to prioritize the future effectively blocked him from hitting that Nike milestone by just five games. This trouble actually started on March 15 when Antetokounmpo hyperextended his left knee during a dunk against the Indiana Pacers. He hasn’t played since then. And the Nike contract, which covers his “Air Zoom Freak” line, required him to play at least 41 games this season. But he finished with only 36. While he wanted to return to reach that threshold, the Bucks, sitting at 31–47 and out of playoff contention, decided to keep him on the bench to protect his health and their draft spot. So, it seems like he has to end his season here with a solid average of 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists the exact dollar amount of the specific missed bonus has not been publicly disclosed. Industry experts have consistently described it as a significant bonus he was vocal about feeling healthy and wanting to return, but the Bucks never officially ordered him to sit out and it eventually tund his reatinhip with teh front office murky an NBA spokesperson confirmed the league is investigating the entire situation. For now they found that the Bucks had scheduled Giannis to participate in three-on-three scrimmages as part of his return-to-play process, but he declined. That spokesperson also noted there is “a disagreement as to whether the team requested that Giannis participate in a group workout earlier this week” and that the league is continuing to monitor the situation. In this vacuum, his big Nike payday narrative has only made things worse. And everything around this suggests the relationship between the two parties is falling apart, with one source describing it as the most toxic situation in the league. “This is as toxic of a team situation as any in the league,” one source close to the team said. “They waited until the very end on Giannis, and now everyone knows.” Moreover, last time, they refused to trade him at the deadline despite interest from the Minnesota Timberwolves, Miami Heat, and Golden State Warriors, but the front office is now reportedly open to offers. The organization seems to have accepted that a trade this offseason is inevitable. In October, he will be eligible to sign a four-year, $275 million extension with the Bucks. If he is traded, he would be eligible to sign that same maximum extension six months after the trade date. It remains to be seen whether his future lies with an extension or a trade.
